What I'm Tuning Into [Favorite Podcasts]

I’m a podcast junkie. 

I listen to them while I cook, clean, walk, drive and ride the bus. They make washing dishes, folding laundry and sitting in traffic so much more enjoyable.

I love how podcasts enrich my life. They fill my mind with new ideas and different perspectives, inspire me to take a different path, help me better understand myself, make me laugh, cry and ponder, and nourish my soul.

I listen to a variety of podcasts from Fresh Air and Freakonomics to Dear Sugar. Here are a few of my favs in the realms of health and well-being that you may enjoy as well:

Psychology of Eating
Breakthrough coaching sessions with Marc David, one of my teachers and the founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating. Covers topics from cravings and emotional eating to chronic dieting and body image.

Tara Brach
Weekly dharma talks and guided meditations by Tara Brach, a well-known, warm, wise and witty meditation teacher, author and psychologist.

The Splendid Table
An enlightening and entertaining show on all things food, from culture and politics to history and cooking tips. I also enjoy The Sporkful, America’s Test Kitchen Radio and Bon Appetit Foodcast.

A Different Kind of Appetite

I just returned from another amazing week of Eating Psychology Teacher Training at the Institute for the Psychology of Eating in Boulder.  This is the first time this training has been offered and I feel tremendously blessed to be given the opportunity to join together with a dynamic group of coaches all dedicated to helping others have a more positive, empowering relationship with food and their body.
 
Totally engrossed in the experience, I felt very little hunger throughout the week. Completely satiated by the teachings and wisdom sharing, my urge to eat was practically nonexistent.  My appetite for food was overshadowed by my appetite for knowledge, inspiration, connection and growth.

So often in life, when we aren't inspired, heeding our desires, or fulfilling our true potential, we turn to food, dieting, exercise, etc. to fill this internal void, to mask the gap between where we're at and where we long to be.  As a result, we find ourselves craving food (like sweets, chips and wine), overeating, binge eating, micromanaging our diet, obsessing over our weight, or exercising excessively.  All of these actions can be magnificent distractions from where the real action is, from honoring and acting on our deep desire to live a fuller, richer and more authentic life.
 
Take a moment to reflect on the times in your life when you were so utterly fed by your experience that everything else--food, dieting, your weight, your troubles--fell by the wayside.  How can you engage in similar experiences, ones that nourish your deepest desires and satisfy your natural appetite for inspiration, stimulation, connection and growth?

My Graduation & Airplane Yogurt Parfait

As I write this, I'm flying home from Boulder where I attended The Future of Healing symposium. The event was the culmination of my yearlong studies with the Institute for the Psychology of Eating. As a result, I am now a proud graduate of their Dynamic Eating Psychology Coach Certification program!

It goes far beyond classical nutrition by focusing on the fascinating connections between brain, body and behavior. Simply put, what we eat is only half of the story of good nutrition. Who we are as eaters is the other half.

With my continued education, I've learned powerful, proven protocols and tools for working with weight issues, body image challenges, overeating, binge eating and a variety of nutrition-related health concerns such as digestion, fatigue, mood and immunity.

Airplane Yogurt Parfait
Whenever I fly, I'm known for packing more food than clothes. Doing so ensures I'm well nourished and don't have to resort to airport or airplane food, which is mostly outrageously overpriced crap.

In a past issue, I shared some of my favorite flying foods (get 'em here). Just in time for summer travel, here's one more healthy, yummy, budget-friendly tip--my "recipe" for Airplane Yogurt Parfait.

Directions

1. Plain Greek yogurt - As yogurt is considered a liquid by the TSA, place a serving inside a plastic snack bag and pack it in your carry-on liquids bag (if it's more than 3.4 ounces, split it into multiple bags).

2. Nuts, seeds and spices - In a separate baggie or container, mix together a few tablespoons of chopped nuts, one tablespoon of ground flax seed or chia seed, and a few pinches of cinnamon.

3. Fruit - In another bag or container, pack prepped strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, etc. If your fruit releases a lot of juice (e.g., frozen berries, peach slices), pack it inside your liquids bag as well, or wait until you're on the plane to slice.

4. Utensils - Be sure to pack a spoon in your carry-on bag. I always travel with my handy bamboo silverware set complete with a spoon, knife and fork.

5. Mix - Simply mix everything into the yogurt bag and dig in!

Of course, this should be eaten soon after preparing unless transferred to an insulated cooler bag after going through security.
