A Short List for Eating Clean This Summer

When I'm at the farmers' market, I'm like a kid in the candy store, especially at this time of year.

As summer greets us with all its delicious bounty, I wanted to share a short list of the seasonal produce that ranks highest in pesticides according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Minimize your exposure to bug- and weed-killers(!) by buying organic versions of the following summer treats.

  • Berries: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries
  • Stone fruits: peaches, nectarines, plums
  • Grapes
  • Cherries
  • Tomatoes

  • Greens: spinach, kale, lettuce, collards
  • Peppers: bell peppers, hot peppers
  • Cucumbers
  • Potatoes
  • Carrots
  • Summer squash
  • Snap peas

Note: As the certification process is expensive, some farmers choose not to become certified yet still use organic growing methods. Also, "natural" doesn't necessarily mean pesticide- or fertilizer-free. Never assume; always ask!
